Protecting Wood Furniture: Prevent Scratches, Water Damage & Fading

Prevention is easier than repair. These simple steps protect your furniture’s finish for years.

Part of our Furniture Assembly & Maintenance Guide.

Threat 1: Scratches

Prevention

  • Use felt pads under anything that sits on the dresser top (lamps, frames, trays)
  • Lift objects to move them — never drag across the surface
  • Keep keys, jewelry, and sharp items in a tray, not directly on wood
  • Use a dresser-top mat or runner for high-use surfaces

Repair

  • Light scratches: Furniture touch-up marker in matching color. Apply, wipe excess, let dry.
  • Deep scratches: Fill with wax filler stick, smooth with plastic scraper, buff with soft cloth.
  • Solid wood: Sand lightly with 220-grit, apply matching stain, seal with polyurethane.

Threat 2: Water Damage

Prevention

  • Always use coasters under drinks
  • Use waterproof saucers under plant pots
  • Wipe condensation immediately (glasses of ice water are the biggest culprit)
  • Don’t place wet items (towels, swim gear) on furniture

Repair

  • White water rings (in the finish): Place a thin cloth over the ring, iron on LOW heat for 10–15 seconds. Check. Repeat if needed. The heat pulls moisture out of the finish.
  • Dark water stains (in the wood): These require sanding and refinishing. For painted surfaces, sand, prime, and repaint.

Threat 3: Sun Fading & UV Damage

Prevention

  • Position furniture away from direct sunlight when possible
  • Use curtains or blinds during peak sun hours
  • Apply UV-blocking window film (protects furniture and floors)
  • Rotate decorative items on the dresser top to prevent uneven fading

Signs of UV damage

Color fading (dark wood becomes lighter, white becomes yellow), finish becomes chalky or dull, surface feels rough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I protect a dresser top from scratches?

A felt-bottom tray for small items, felt pads under lamps and frames, and a fabric runner or mat for the surface. Lift objects to move them, never slide.

Can I fix water damage on MDF furniture?

Minor swelling can sometimes be sanded and repainted. Significant swelling (bubbling, warping) usually can’t be reversed — the internal fibers have expanded permanently. Prevention is the only real solution for MDF.
