Fixing Loose Dresser Drawers: Quick Solutions That Work
Share
A stuck or wobbly drawer doesn’t mean your dresser is done. Most drawer problems take 10–15 minutes to fix.
Part of our Furniture Assembly & Maintenance Guide.
Problem 1: Drawer Sticks or Is Hard to Open
Causes
- Dirty or obstructed slides
- Wood swelling from humidity
- Misaligned slides
Fix
- Remove the drawer completely
- Clean the slides with a dry cloth (remove dust, hair, debris)
- Apply paraffin wax, candle wax, or silicone spray to the slides
- Check for obstructions in the slide track
- If wood is swollen (humid climate), run a dehumidifier or sand the contact points lightly
Problem 2: Drawer Falls Off Track
Causes
- Overloaded drawer, bent slide, or worn roller
Fix
- Empty the drawer and remove it
- Inspect both slides (cabinet side and drawer side). Look for bent metal or broken rollers.
- If bent, gently straighten with pliers
- If rollers are broken, replace the slide set ($10–$20 at any hardware store)
- Reinstall and test with a moderate load
Problem 3: Drawer Won’t Close Flush
Causes
- Items caught behind the drawer, misaligned frame, or slide adjustment needed
Fix
- Check for items fallen behind the drawer (socks are the #1 culprit)
- Check if the drawer is level — adjust slide mounting screws
- Ensure the back panel of the dresser is secure (loose back panels cause frame shifting)
Problem 4: Loose or Wobbly Drawer Front
Fix
- Open the drawer and look inside the front panel
- Tighten the screws connecting the drawer front to the drawer box
- If screws spin freely (stripped hole), remove screw, fill hole with a wooden toothpick + wood glue, let dry, re-drive screw
Problem 5: Drawer Slides Are Noisy
Fix
Apply silicone lubricant or rub a candle/paraffin wax block along the slide rails. Avoid WD-40 — it attracts dust and gums up over time.
Problem 6: Sagging Drawer Bottom
Fix
- Remove drawer contents
- If the bottom is hardboard, flip it over (the other side may be flatter)
- For a permanent fix: cut a piece of thin plywood to fit inside the drawer as a support layer
- Long-term: consider upgrading to a dresser with plywood drawer bottoms
When to Replace Instead of Fix
- Frame is warped or cracked — structural failure, can’t be fixed safely
- Multiple drawers failing simultaneously — likely poor overall construction
- Cost of replacement slides + time > 50% of a new dresser price

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace dresser drawer slides myself?
Yes. Measure the slide length, buy the same size at a hardware store, and swap them. Takes about 15 minutes per drawer. Ball-bearing slides cost $10–$25 per pair.
