How to Assemble a Dresser: Step-by-Step Guide
Share
Dresser assembly doesn’t have to be frustrating. Follow this guide and you’ll have it built in 1–2 hours with no leftover screws.
Part of our Furniture Assembly & Maintenance Guide.
Tools You’ll Need
- Phillips head screwdriver (manual or electric at low speed)
- Rubber mallet (for tapping dowels and panels into place)
- Allen key / hex wrench (usually included)
- Level (phone apps work)
- Soft surface (cardboard or blanket to protect the floor and the finish)
Optional: Electric drill/driver (set to LOW torque), headlamp for seeing into dark cabinet interiors.
Before You Start
- Clear the space — You need about 6x8 feet of open floor space
- Lay down cardboard — Protects the floor and the furniture finish
- Open and inventory — Open all boxes, lay out panels, count hardware against the list
- Sort hardware — Group screws, dowels, cam locks, and bolts. Label groups if there are many types.
- Read ALL instructions — Before touching a single screw, read every step. Note where steps say “do not fully tighten yet.”
Assembly Steps (General)
While every dresser is different, the standard sequence is:
- Build the frame — Connect side panels to top and bottom. Usually with cam locks and dowels.
- Add center dividers — Vertical or horizontal panels that create drawer openings.
- Attach back panel — Usually a thin panel nailed or screwed to the frame back. This provides rigidity.
- Install drawer slides — Mount the cabinet-side slides in the correct positions. Use a level.
- Assemble drawers — Build each drawer box, attach the drawer-side slides and the drawer front.
- Insert drawers — Slide drawers into their tracks. Test each one.
- Attach hardware — Knobs, handles, and any decorative elements.
- Anchor to wall — Use the included anti-tip kit. This is not optional.
Common Assembly Mistakes
- Not reading ahead — Step 8 might say “now tighten what you left loose in step 3.” If you already tightened, you may need to disassemble.
- Over-tightening in MDF — MDF strips easily. Go snug, not gorilla-tight.
- Wrong panel orientation — Pre-drilled holes face specific directions. Double-check before connecting.
- Skipping the back panel — It’s not decorative — it’s structural. Without it, the dresser will wobble and eventually collapse.
- Assembling alone — Large dressers need two people. Holding a 50-pound frame while screwing is unsafe solo.
- Not anchoring to the wall — Tall dressers can tip. Always use anti-tip hardware, especially with children in the home.
Assembly Time by Dresser Size
| Dresser Size | Assembly Time | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| 3–4 drawers | 45–75 min | Easy |
| 5–6 drawers | 60–90 min | Moderate |
| 7–9 drawers | 90–120 min | Moderate-Hard |
Our Fabric Dressers require no tools and assemble in 15–30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need power tools to assemble a dresser?
No. The included Allen key and a manual screwdriver are sufficient. A drill/driver speeds things up but set it to LOW torque to avoid stripping screws in MDF.
Can I assemble a dresser by myself?
Small dressers (4–5 drawers), yes. For 6+ drawer dressers, have a second person help lift and hold the frame during assembly. It’s safer and prevents damage.
