Small Bedroom Layout Guide: Maximize Every Square Foot
Share
In a small bedroom, layout is everything. The right arrangement makes a tight room feel open; the wrong one makes it feel like a storage unit.
Part of our Modern Bedroom Design Guide.
Small Bedroom Layout Rules
- Bed against the longest wall — Maximizes floor space on all other walls
- Dresser on the opposite wall — Creates visual balance and keeps walkways clear
- 30” minimum walkways — You need at least 30” to walk comfortably and open drawers
- One side of the bed is OK — In very tight rooms, push the bed to one wall. One walkway beats two cramped ones.
- Door swing clearance — Don’t put furniture where the door swings open
Layout 1: Classic Small Bedroom (10x12 ft)
Queen bed centered on 12ft wall. Dresser on opposite wall. One nightstand.
- Bed: Queen (60x80”) centered on long wall
- Dresser: 6-Drawer Rattan (50” wide) on opposite wall
- Nightstand: One side only
- Remaining floor space: ~25 sq ft walkway
Layout 2: Narrow Room (9x12 ft)
Bed pushed to one wall. Dresser at foot of bed or in closet.
- Bed: Queen against long wall, one side touching wall
- Dresser: 4-Drawer Compact (32” wide) at foot of bed or inside closet
- Walkway: One clear 36” path along the bed
Layout 3: Square Room (10x10 ft)
Bed in corner. Dresser and nightstand on adjacent walls.
- Bed: Full/queen in corner (head + one side against walls)
- Dresser: 5-Drawer Rattan on the wall facing the bed
- This layout opens up an L-shaped floor space for a chair or desk
Layout 4: Studio/Alcove Bedroom
No walls to spare. Use the dresser as a room divider.
- Place a 7-Drawer Dresser perpendicular to the wall as a partial divider
- Bed behind the dresser, living space in front
- Doubles as bedroom storage AND room separation
Layout 5: Bedroom with Dresser in Closet
If your closet is 4+ feet wide, put the dresser inside it. This frees the bedroom for just bed + nightstands.
- Closet dresser: 4-Drawer Cabinet ($100) or 5-Drawer Cabinet ($175)
- Result: bedroom has maximum open floor space

Frequently Asked Questions
What size dresser fits in a small bedroom?
For rooms under 120 sq ft, stay under 44” wide. A 4-drawer dresser (32”) or 5-drawer (36”) works best. See our small bedroom dresser guide.
Should I use a full or queen bed in a small room?
A queen fits in rooms 10x10 and larger. Below that, consider a full. The 6” width difference (54” vs 60”) translates to noticeably more walkway space.
